The lacquered brass case with hardstone panels composed of a dark blue background with brightly coloured flowers and foliage, the top with a bevel-edged platform viewing glass and folding handle. The white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, outer minutes chapter and blued steel 'spade' pattern hands with a retailer's name to the base. The French, eight day movment retaining its original silvered, cylinder platform and leather covered outer carrying case.
Pietra Dura, literally 'Hard Stones' in Italian is the term used for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished coloured stones to creat images, in this case flowers and foliage. It first appeared in Rome in the 16th century, reaching its maturity in Florence.
